22 Martyrs of Uganda

A bronze, bas-relief of the 22 Catholic Martyrs of Uganda, gifted to Presentation College, Chaguanas, Trinidad and Tobago. It was given in 1960 to the Christian brothers who founded Presentation College. Photo by Sean Crepin

The Uganda Martyrs are a group of 23 Anglican and 22 Catholic converts to Christianity in the historical kingdom of Buganda, now part of Uganda, who were executed between 31 January 1885 and 27 January 1887. They were killed on orders of Mwanga II, the Kabaka (King) of Buganda.

22 of the Catholic martyrs were canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1964. They are commemorated on June 3rd.

Poetry Monday: Admiration

We smile when the food comes to the table.

Polite smiles until the waiter walks away.

We needed this food

To swallow

A long day

With mixed emotions.

There is quiet at the dinner table.

Rhythmic chewing and swallowing takes everyone

Into their own thoughts.

Knife into fork.

I'm finished.

Baby girl began speaking.

Proud parents are smiling.

An effervescent Joi,

Captures her audience then releases them to a moment of silence.

"What?"

A statement than a question

To her dreamy eyed mother,

Me.

"Just looking."

I smile

She smiles

We smile and she knows, but still asks

"Why?"

"Because you exist. Can't I admire you now and then?"

Admire her as one would a blue sky

Or misty mountains.

I see her.

She sees me.

She smiles.

I smile.

We smile.

DAP Poetry Monday: Hungry like a wolf

Hungry like a wolf

Howling to be seen and heard

Barking at the past

Hungry like a wolf

Ushering the dawn of change

With my noshing teeth

Hungry like a wolf

Conjuring my own food source

To a permanent plate

DAP Poetry Mondays: #CorpLife

Today is World Poetry Day. Held every year on 21 March, World Poetry Day celebrates one of humanity’s most treasured forms of cultural and linguistic expression and identity. Practiced throughout history – in every culture and on every continent – poetry speaks to our common humanity and our shared values, transforming the simplest of poems into a powerful catalyst for dialogue and peace.

World Poetry Day was declared by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1999, "with the aim of supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard".

Here is my contribution...

Corporations aren't...

People, Loving. In to you.

Life is optional

Living that CorpLife.

Hashtag; Nobody cares, bro.

Hearts are optional

DAP my characters: Kenji

Meet Kenji. I am currently working on his story and this is what I imagine him to look like. To be fair, I have been working on this story for over 12 years. Eeep! Sometimes, to help develop a character, I put the name in Google images, just to see what a person with this name would look like in general. Usually it fits. LOL!

Kenji Watanabe

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

Likes wood-working and does that for a living

Muscular

A Hermit (most of the time)

Hasn't had a relationship for 10 years

Christian

Once engaged but not married

A good cook

Only visited Japan once.

Monday poem -2-7-22

A vase shattered

In the smallest pieces.

Years of humble cracks

Withstanding the torments of tempests.

But now,

With nothing but a baby's breath,

The vase shattered.

Small pieces of painted daisies,

Scattered.

Only to find,

It isn't hollow

But,

Terraformed steel.
